Dubai: Gold Coin Shortage


But this year, Dubai's biggest shopping carnival has been dampened by the shortage of Gold Bullion coins, for which there is a big demand.

"People are coming and asking for coins," says a manager for Joy Alukkas, a leading jeweler in the Gulf countries. "But there is a terrible Gold-Coin Shortage. Many gold and jewelry shops in Dubai do not have enough stock."

Gold Market in Turkey


Gold gave the best real rate of return in Turkey in 2008, with 22.48 percent, while stock exchange investors lost 57.75 percent over the same period, the Turkish Statistics Institute said on Monday.
In a statement it said the other real rates of return were 19.21 percent on the U.S. dollar, 11.30 percent on the euro and 4.91 percent on deposit interest, according to the consumer price index.
In December alone, the highest month-on-month real profit was on the euro at 3.93 percent, followed by gold at 3.12 percent and the stock exchange at 2.32 percent.
Turkish financial markets were battered in 2008 by the global financial crisis and a sharp slowdown in the Turkish economy.

DGCX: Strong Growth in Precious Metals

The Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange (DGCX) posted strong growth in precious metals, currencies and energy last year. It also diversified its portfolio by introducing innovative products into the Middle Eastern market.

The exchange recorded 26 per cent year-on-year growth with 1.14 million contracts, valued at $57.5 billion, traded last year. Average daily volume touched just over 4,500 contracts last year, an increase of 28pc compared with 2007. Since inception in November 2005, over 2.6m contracts have been traded with a value in excess of $107bn.
